Open Water Swim Clinic: How Can You Build Race-Day Confidence?
Why Should You Join an Open Water Swim Clinic?
Swimming in open water can feel very different from swimming in a pool. There are no lane lines to follow and no walls to push off. As a result, many triathletes feel nervous before race day. An open water swim clinic can help you feel more comfortable and prepare for these challenges.

Open water swim clinic |
RTA Triathlon offers open water swim clinics designed to improve your swimming skills and build confidence. These sessions combine simple guidance with practical swimming experience. Moreover, coaches and lifeguards provide support while participants practice in the water.
What Can You Learn During the Clinic?
The clinic focuses on useful techniques that can help you prepare for a triathlon swim. Instead of spending too much time listening, you will spend most of the session swimming and practicing.
You can learn how to:
Plan your swim start: Understand how to approach the beginning of a race.
Handle crowded swimming conditions: Become more comfortable swimming around other athletes.
Practice sighting: Learn to check your direction without losing your swimming rhythm.
Improve drafting: Understand how to position yourself behind another swimmer.
Navigate buoys: Practice turning around buoys during a swim.
Exit the water: Prepare for the transition from swimming to the next part of your triathlon.
Remove your wetsuit: Learn this useful race-day skill.
Additionally, RTA divides participants into groups based on their ability. This helps provide a more suitable experience for different swimmers.
Who Can Attend an Open Water Swim Clinic?
The clinic is for swimmers who already know how to swim. Participants must feel comfortable treading water and be able to swim 200 yards continuously in a pool. However, you do not need to be a very fast swimmer.
Please remember that this is a technique-based clinic, not a beginner swimming lesson.
How Can You Prepare for Your Session?
Before attending, bring the following items:
Swimsuit and goggles
Swim cap, which is required
Towel
Wetsuit, which is highly recommended
Water bottle
Tri Slide or Body Glide, if needed
RTA holds its clinics at Indian Trails Club in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey. Lifeguards remain on duty, while coaches support swimmers from kayaks or paddleboards.
